Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site is now accepting applications for a 2020 Teacher Ranger Teacher (TRT), an extended professional development opportunity for educators from K-12 schools to learn about the resources and educational materials available through the National Park Service. The TRT program offer teachers a unique opportunity to infuse their teaching skills with NPS-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education resources, the use of primary sources and place-based learning.
The TRT will produce a major education project for Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site (CHSC) as part of the program requirements. The suggested major project for Little Rock Central High School NHS will be to review existing CHSC education materials, synthesize relevant curriculum with subject matter from external partners, and generate web-based content to better connect educators to CHSC and other sites connected to the Civil and Human Rights movements.
The TRT program is administered through an agreement with the National Park Service and the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver). While participating in the program, teachers are considered “student interns" of the university and will be able to earn continuing education graduate credits as part of the TRT program. A $3,000 stipend will be administered to the TRT via CU Denver upon successful completion of both the NPS and CU Denver program requirements.
The Teacher Ranger Teacher Program is the centerpiece of a larger NPS Teacher Corps, a concept that incorporates ways that educators interact with the NPS including volunteerism, teacher workshops, professional development seminars, and park-based activities that include teacher involvement.
