The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Dec. 9, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

MESA VERDE, CO-- Due to public safety concerns, Mesa Verde National Park has cancelled the Holiday Open House and Luminaria scheduled for Thursday, December 9. The weather forecast shows a strong winter storm moving through the region today and tonight with intense precipitation and high winds possible. These conditions present safety concerns for visitors and staff alike.

Park Superintendent Kayci Cook Collins said, “We know just how important this winter tradition is and understand the disappointment visitors will feel. Therefore, we intend to make the magic happen at a later date. We will reschedule this event for January or February if possible and will share that information once it is available. We thank everyone for their understanding and support. It was a difficult decision."
