Youth Fife & Drum Corps to Perform at Fort Stanwix

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on July 6. It is reproduced in full below.

On Monday, July 11, The Plymouth Fife and Drum Corps will perform at Fort Stanwix National Monument at11 a.m., as part of the Fort Stanwix summer program series. These all-youth performers will feature music spanning the 17th-20th centuries and combine high-level musical performance with precision marching in the historically accurate uniforms of the Commander in Chief’s personal Life Guard of 1776-1783, a prestigious unit that protected the life and important documents of General George Washington.

“Fifers and drummers were the timekeepers and communications specialists of the Continental Army. Their work allowed the soldiers to understand their schedules and orders through the day via music," said Park Ranger William Sawyer. “It’s fantastic to see this group honoring these traditions, especially going into our nation’s 250th birthday celebrations!"

The Plymouth Fife and Drum Corps consist of students, ranging in age from 12 to 18, from Plymouth, Michigan, and its surrounding communities. The Plymouth Fife and Drum Corps is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the ancient arts of color guard, fifing and drumming through live performances at parades, historical and patriotic celebrations, concerts, cultural affairs and other civic events.
