Lassen Volcanic Proposes Online Wilderness Permitting

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Aug. 31. It is reproduced in full below.

Public comments on this proposal are invited through Sept. 30, 2022. Comments may be submitted by visiting https://parkplanning.nps.gov/lavobcpermit1. Comments may also be submitted by email to e-mail us or by mail to Lassen Volcanic National Park / Attn: Nancy Nordensten / PO Box 100 / Mineral, CA 96063.

“An online permit system can help visitors plan in advance and receive important communications from the park about their trip," said Superintendent Jim Richardson. “The approach of the Dixie Fire in August 2021 is an example of important information that could be communicated through an online registration system."

An online permit system would provide a convenient way for visitors to plan their trip and obtain a wilderness permit up to three months in advance or the same day as their trip. The system will provide links to trip planning information on the park website as well as important alerts such as road status and area closures.

The proposed online permit system would go into effect Jan. 1, 2023. The online system would collect the same information as the existing paper system. No limit or quota on the number of permits issued per day is being proposed. Stock permits will not be included in the system at this time.

Online registration stations would be installed at the Manzanita Lake and Southwest entrance station areas if the online permit system is instituted. Remote self-registration stations would be removed from Butte Lake, Warner Valley, and Juniper Lake areas.

This project would implement a non-refundable Recreation.gov administration fee of $6 per permit, plus an additional per-trip wilderness permit fee of $5 for each person 16 years and older. The wilderness permit fee will directly benefit Lassen Volcanic National Park and would be used for wilderness management and improvement work such as trail repair, wilderness patrols, and resource monitoring work.

The implementation of an online wilderness permit system would bring Lassen Volcanic in-line with numerous parks that already offer permits through Recreation.gov.
