Carlsbad, NM - The Department of Energy ‘s Carlsbad Field Office today renewed a cooperative agreement with the Council of State Governments (CSG) - Midwestern Region for oversight of transportation of transuranic waste through Midwestern states to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The cooperative agreement is for five-years with an estimated cost of approximately $1.4 million.
Through the cooperative agreement DOE provides funding to the CSG- Midwestern Region to address issues of common concern among the Midwestern states to include transportation of radioactive TRU waste through the states to WIPP. The CSG- Midwestern Region administers the distribution of funds to the appropriate states based upon submitted annual work plans.
The CSG-Midwestern Region includes: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
WIPP is the nation’s only deep-geologic repository to isolate defense-related TRU waste from the environment. Waste temporarily stored at sites around the county is shipped to WIPP and permanently disposed in rooms mined out of an ancient salt formation 2,150 feet below the surface.
