The Cybersecurity for Energy Delivery Systems (CEDS) program funds a diverse portfolio of research and development (R&D) that is re-designing energy delivery systems to adapt and survive cyber-attacks. On November 6-8, 2018, CEDS is holding a Peer Review in Arlington, Virginia, where energy industry representatives can learn about cutting-edge cyber R&D in active projects and provide input on future CEDS research priorities.
CEDS R&D projects deliver advanced tools and technologies for the energy sector’s operational technology (OT)-the digital systems and networks that control energy delivery. Unlike information technology (IT) on business networks, OT systems manage real-time physical processes, where a sophisticated cyber attack could damage equipment and disrupt energy delivery.
To reduce cyber risk to these specialized systems, CEDS and its R&D partners are developing innovative capabilities for energy delivery systems and devices to prevent attacks, detect malicious activity, and automatically adapt to survive cyber-attacks while sustaining critical functions. The CEDS program manages a diverse portfolio of competitively funded R&D under the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER).
Partnering with industry, cybersecurity vendors, academia, and national laboratories, CEDS has been able to deliver more than 47 products, tools, and technologies to help reduce the OT cyber risk. The 2018 Peer Review provides an opportunity to directly engage with researchers designing the next generation of cybersecurity solutions for the energy sector.
Attend the 2018 CEDS R&D Peer Review
The 2018 CEDS Peer Review will take place November 6-8, 2018, at the Hilton Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia. Independent technical experts will perform a documented evaluation of active CEDS research projects. Researchers from each of the projects will present their project(s) and progress and respond to expert review panel questions and discussion.
The CEDS Peer Review is open to the public and is a great opportunity for representatives of the energy industry to learn more about the program’s extensive research portfolio. The program staff welcomes questions and professional insight from attendees.
Throughout the Peer Review, project researchers will be available during poster sessions to describe their work in more detail. All attendees are welcome to explore the poster room and talk with the talented researchers.
Provide Input on Future Research Priorities
On the last day, the CEDS Peer Review will hold a facilitated discussion on future potential research in energy sector cybersecurity. One of the primary references used in the discussion will be the 2018 developed by DOE as a guideline for programmatic decision making. Representatives from energy sector asset owners and operators, vendors, and research organizations will have an opportunity to discuss current and future needs for cybersecurity for energy delivery systems. All attendees of the peer review are encouraged to attend this facilitated discussion.
