Remarks at a Third Committee Interactive Dialogue on the Protection of and Assistance to Internally Displaced Persons

The United States appreciates the efforts of the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons and her dedication to advancing assistance to and protection of IDPs over the past six years. We are proud to have supported this position and the global travel of the Special Rapporteur during her tenure.

We particularly appreciate her focus on the participation of IDPs in formulating and implementing solutions for displacement. Inclusive processes which involve and empower marginalized groups are necessary to work toward better humanitarian and development outcomes.

We are deeply concerned by continued widespread armed conflict, violence, natural disasters, and worsening climate change, which are driving record numbers of people to flee their homes.

We agree with the Secretary-General’s statement in early 2022 that “more of the same is not enough.” Accordingly, we welcome the Action Agenda and the appointment of a Special Advisor on solutions to internal displacement as an opportunity to do more and be creative about achieving more impactful and durable solutions.

We encourage the UN to robustly engage affected states, donors, and international financial institutions and to work these engagements toward concrete action to improve outcomes for IDPs.

Madame Special Rapporteur, do you have any final recommendations on how the Inter-Agency Standing Committee should advance response support to IDPs?
