House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said her husband, Paul Pelosi, was released from the hospital following the violent assault against him Oct. 28.
In an Oct. 29 letter written to Congress by Nancy Pelosi, she said her husband was attacked after a man broke into their family home. House Speaker Pelosi said in her letter that the man was looking for her.
“Since the horrific attack on Paul early Friday, we have been deluged with thousands of messages conveying concern, prayers and warm wishes,” she said in an Oct. 31 Twitter post. “We are most grateful. Thanks to the excellent team at [Zuckerberg SF General Hospital & Trauma Center], Paul is making steady progress on what will be a long recovery process."
Nancy Pelosi's husband had been released from the hospital Nov. 3, according to AP News. Paul Pelosi, 82, was attacked by a Canadian man with a hammer, who had broken into their family home in San Francisco, allegedly looking for the House Speaker. Paul Pelosi was taken to, and has since been released from, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Despite being released to his home, Paul Pelosi continues to remain under doctors’ care.
“Our children, our grandchildren and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our Pop,” Nancy Pelosi wrote in her letter. She thanked those who sent well wishes and explained that Paul’s “condition continues to improve.”
The attacker, David DePape, 42, reportedly should have been flagged by immigration officials and blocked from re-entering the United States for overstaying his visa by more than two decades, AP said in its report. He now faces state charges of attempted murder, burglary and elder abuse, as well as federal charges that include attempted kidnapping of a U.S. official. DePape has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
