Coria: Care of the vulnerable 'depends on truly dedicated people'

The U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division will hold a webinar on "Caring for Those Who Care: Fair Labor Standards Act Requirements in the Care Industry” Nov. 17 in the middle of Home Care and Hospice Month.

The public webinar for employers, employees and other stakeholders in the home care, residential care and nursing care industries will attempt to increase compliance in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, according to a Nov. 3 news release.

“Our nation’s ability to care for the most vulnerable people in our communities depends on truly dedicated people,” Wage and Hour Division Regional Administrator in Atlanta Juan Coria said in the release.

Wage and Hour Division Regional Administrator Juan Coria in Atlanta said the Labor Department will make sure home care and hospice workers are not denied hard-earned wages. This initiative uses enforcement and assistance with compliance to decrease violations by employers.

The Wage and Hour Division discovers workers too often get victimized by wage thefts caused by unscrupulous employers and those who misunderstand the law. Coria said violating the law can have costly consequences and encouraged employers to contact the agency to get answers and assistance.
