2018 Annual Capital Expenditures for Robotic Equipment

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of Census Bureau on Sept. 30, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

Today the U.S. Census Bureau released new Annual Capital Expenditures Survey (ACES) estimates by kind of business that provide additional detail to the national-level estimates of investment in machinery and equipment. These new ACES data tables provide national-level estimates of capital expenditures for robotic equipment, based on the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), at the two-digit and select three- and four-digit NAICS levels. There are also new charts that provide national-level estimates by size distribution and by share of firms by size for select two-digit NAICS. These estimates are released as an experimental data product.

Capital expenditures for both industrial and service robotic equipment were collected for the first time in the 2018 ACES. The growing interest and high demand by researchers, congressional members and other groups led to the specific measuring of robot adoption intensity and the impact on employment and productivity.
