Census Bureau Releases 2022 Capital Spending Report

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of Census Bureau on April 6. It is reproduced in full below.

The U.S. Census Bureau today released the 2022 Capital Spending Report: U.S. Capital Spending Patterns 2011-2020. Data in this report are from the Census Bureau's 2011 to 2020 Annual Capital Expenditures Survey (ACES), which collected information about nonfarm U.S. business expenditures on new and used structures and equipment. It also examines investment shares over time.

The Capital Spending Report series covers spending by two-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) industry sectors in a 10-year moving window ending in 2020, the most recent ACES reference year.

Highlights

From 2011 to 2020, the period covered by this report:

* U.S. nonfarm businesses increased total spending by $463.5 billion (37.3%), from $1,243.0 billion to $1,706.4 billion.

* The utilities sector showed the largest increase - $84.2 billion (85.8%).

* The mining sector showed the largest decrease - $68.6 billion (41.4%).

These statistics are an important input for federal agencies constructing composite national economic measures, such as the Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates of private-fixed investments (a major component of gross domestic product); Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates of capital stocks for productivity analysis; and Federal Reserve Board Flow of Funds accounts.
