Modernization of Federal Columbia River Power System projects ensures reliability for many years into the future. Therefore, the Bureau of Reclamation has contracted with BCI Construction USA, Inc., to demolish the gantry crane on top of Hungry Horse Dam from Nov. 14 to Nov. 22, 2022. The gantry crane is used to conduct maintenance on the dam and is essential to continue to provide electrical power generation for the next 30 years and more. It reached the intended service life and will be replaced in spring 2023.
The public may experience intermediate traffic flow interruptions on Hungry Horse Dam Road over the dam during construction. Hungry Horse Dam is located off Highway 2 in Hungry Horse. Flaggers will direct traffic on top of the dam; both lanes will remain open. Traffic will not be stopped on the dam for any road closures. Reclamation is working with BCI Construction USA, Inc. to minimize any potential traffic impacts. The contractor will provide signage at the intersection of U.S. Route 2 and NF 895 to alert motorists to expect traffic delays across the dam. Please allow for more time when making travel plans.
The gantry crane demolition is a component of the November 2018 Hungry Horse Power Plant Modernization and Overhaul project. For more information about the project, visit https://www.usbr.gov/pn/programs/ea/montana/hungryhorse/index.html.
