Thank you. The United States thanks the Special Rapporteur for the insightful reporting.
The United States remains deeply concerned by reports of unlawful killings, enforced disappearances, torture, arbitrary detention, closed civic space, and other human rights violations and abuses in Eritrea. We support the call for Eritrea to develop a national action plan for the implementation of recommendations by numerous human rights mechanisms.
We highlight the findings of the Special Rapporteur that Eritrea’s involvement in the war in Ethiopia has resulted in abhorrent human rights abuses, including the unlawful recruitment of child soldiers and the kidnapping and forced conscription of Eritrean refugees to fight in the conflict. We call on Eritrean forces to permanently withdraw from Ethiopia and to cease fueling the conflict.
Our question for the Special Rapporteur is: What more can States do to hold perpetrators accountable for human rights violations and abuses occurring in Eritrea, as well as abuses committed by Eritrean forces in Ethiopia?
I thank you.
