From June 2021 to June 2022, employment increased in 338 of the 355 largest U.S. counties, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. In June 2022, national employment increased to 149.9 million, a 4.0-percent increase over the year, as measured by the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program. Orange, FL, had the largest over-the-year increase in employment, with a gain of 9.7 percent. Employment data in this release are presented for June 2022, and average weekly wage data are presented for second quarter 2022.
Among the 355 largest counties, 340 had over-the-year increases in average weekly wages. In the second quarter of 2022, average weekly wages for the nation increased to $1,294, a 4.3-percent increase over the year. Saratoga, NY, had the largest second quarter over-the-year wage gain at 16.3 percent. (See table 1.)
Large County Employment in June 2022
Orange, FL, had the largest over-the-year percentage increase in employment (+9.7 percent). Within Orange, the largest employment increase occurred in leisure and hospitality, which rose by 38,690 over the year (+23.2 percent). Kanawha, WV, experienced the largest over-the-year percentage decrease in employment, with a loss of 1.0 percent. Within Kanawha, education and health services had the largest employment decrease, with a decline of 533 (-2.7 percent).
Large County Average Weekly Wage in Second Quarter 2022
Saratoga, NY, had the largest over-the-year percentage increase in average weekly wages (+16.3 percent). Within Saratoga, an average weekly wage gain of $1,748 (+109.3 percent) in manufacturing made the largest contribution to the county’s increase in average weekly wages.
Benton, AR, had the largest over-the-year percentage decrease in average weekly wages, with a loss of 16.1 percent. Within Benton, professional and business services had the largest impact, with an average weekly wage decrease of $952 (-35.9 percent) over the year.
Ten Largest Counties
All of the 10 largest counties had over-the-year percentage increases in employment. In June 2022, New York, NY, had the largest over-the-year employment percentage gain (+8.0 percent). Within New York, leisure and hospitality had the largest employment increase and rose by 78,453 (+45.6 percent). (See table 2.)
Among the 10 largest counties, 8 had over-the-year percentage increases in average weekly wages. In second quarter 2022, Miami-Dade, FL, experienced the largest over-the-year percentage gain in average weekly wages (+7.7 percent). Within Miami-Dade, professional and business services had the largest impact, with an average weekly wage increase of $199 (+14.1 percent) over the year.
