CAÑON CITY, Colo. - This holiday season, permits are available for cutting trees on Bureau of Land Management public lands in the San Luis Valley and Royal Gorge field offices through Dec. 24, 2022.
Permits may now be purchased online for either office, and maps of permissible cutting areas are available for those who wish to plan their trip in advance.

San Luis Valley
Permits may be purchased for $10 per tree at the BLM field office in Monte Vista, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Permits can be purchased with cash, check, or credit card and must be picked up in person.

The BLM recommends bringing along a handsaw, eye protection, rope or twine, extra food, water and blankets when selecting and cutting a tree. Tire chains, a shovel, and emergency supplies are also valuable to have along, if needed. Permit holders are encouraged to bring maps and ensure they are cutting a tree on BLM lands in an area that is open to tree cutting.
