Swan: Conservation program will help 'lower the severity of wildfires in Lawrence County'

The National Resources Conversation Service's Conservation Implementation Strategy Project Resilient Forests is preparing for implementation in Lawrence County, South Dakota.

Final day to apply for the program is Feb. 3, according to a Jan. 3 NRCS news release. The project will address "overstocked stands of ponderosa pine," according to the release.

"Restoring the forest to a healthy stand density will work to keep disease in check and lower the severity of wildfires in Lawrence County," Belle Fourche Acting District Conservationist Tyler Swan said in the news release. "Private landowner involvement is vital to the success of this project in both remote and developing areas across the Northern Hills."

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Lawrence Conservation District and South Dakota Family Forests Association are working with farmers ,ranchers and landowners, the release reported. This three-year project is federally funded through the 2018 Farm Bill.

"The NRCS conservation specialists and partners are coordinating these projects throughout the state. Through collectively focusing expertise and resources on the highest priority resource concerns in the highest priority areas, CIS projects can yield the most impressive returns," the news release reported. "Collaborative funding and support from other agencies and groups create a coordinated community effort and focus on mutual issues of concern."

The Resilient Forests Project will directly benefit forest landowners and Lawrence County communities. Specific resource concerns identified include wildfire hazard from biomass accumulation and plant structure and composition, according to the release.

Anyone who would like to apply may contact their local NRCS Service Center or contact Swan at tyler.swan@usda.gov or 605-892-3368, ext. 3071, the release reported. Individuals within the project areas are eligible.
