A San Antonio man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for receiving child sexual abuse material, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas.

According to a Jan. 10 U.S. Department of Justice news release, Dustin Kotara, 42, was allegedly involved in a messaging group dedicated to child exploitation and abuse. Via a cell phone app, he conveyed child pornography to an undercover official.

“Individuals who traffic child pornography further victimize those children by enabling the production of child sexual abuse material,” U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza said in the news release. “This results in the direct abuse of children. Our office will continue to identify and prosecute those who prey on the most vulnerable members of our society.”

Kotara received a 13-year prison sentence followed by 25 years of supervised release, according to the news release. He will have to pay $45,000 in restitution to nine minor victims. The DOJ noted the FBI investigated the case, and U.S. Attorney Tracy Thompson handled the prosecution.

Oliver E. Rich, Jr., a special agent in charge at the FBI’s San Antonio division, noted agents and authorities partner daily to prevent crimes like this, according to the release.

“The FBI will remain vigilant in our efforts to rescue children from those who seek to exploit or prey upon them,” he said in the news release.
