EPA awards Guam Department of Education nearly $9.9 million for cleaner school buses

The Guam Department of Education is among the recipients of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus Program rebate competition.

The Guam Department of Education will receive approximately $9.875 million through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help in the purchase of “25 clean battery-electric school buses,” a news release said.

“EPA is making an unprecedented investment in our children’s future by reducing climate pollution, and ensuring clean, breathable air,” EPA Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Martha Guzman said in the release.

The EPA has awarded $948 million to 403 applicants of the Clean School Bus Program to help purchase 2,571 buses, 95% of which will be battery electric, the release said.

School districts serving low-income, rural and/or tribal students comprise 99% of the projects selected for funding.

“As proud recipients of the EPA Clean School Bus Program, we are thankful for the Biden-Harris administration’s transformative vision with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and for EPA Administrator Michael Regan’s leadership to ensure speedy and equitable issuance of awards that will enhance Guam’s regional efforts in reversing the effects of climate change,” said Guam Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero in the release.

“In 2019, Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio and I created the Climate Change Resiliency Commission on Guam," he added. "This was geared toward developing an integrated strategy to build resiliency against the adverse effects of climate change and reduce contributing factors such as greenhouse gas emissions.”
