Moy: Capture of international sex trafficker 'an example of how the FBI will pursue justice beyond U.S. borders'

A lead on a a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) tip line has resulted in the arrest last month in Spain of a foreign national on the Federal Bureau of Investigations' (FBI) 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list.

Michael James Pratt, 40, of New Zealand, was arrested Dec. 21 in Madrid, where is being detained pending extradition to the U.S., ICE announced Jan. 13. Pratt, a fugitive since 2019 and on the Most Wanted list since last year, is charged with multiple sex and financial crimes, including "sex trafficking, production of child pornography, sex trafficking of a minor, and conspiracy to launder monetary instruments in connection with the operation of adult pornography website," ICE reports.

An Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) deportation officer assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service’s San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force helped with Pratt’s arrest. The ERO officer teamed with U.S. marshals to find Pratt in what an ERO official called "a great example" of inter-agency cooperation.

“This case is a great example of how federal and international law enforcement agencies work collectively to bring to justice criminals like Pratt, who exploit the vulnerabilities of young women,” ERO San Diego Field Office Director Jamison Matuszewski said in the announcement.

Stacey Moy, special agent in charge of the FBI San Diego office, thanks the "determined" FBI San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force and additional federal and international agencies for their focus on bringing Pratt to justice.

“The capture of Michael Pratt is an example of how the FBI will pursue justice beyond U.S. borders — you can run, but you can’t hide,” Moy said in the announcement.
