The Whatcom Conservation District is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and partners through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) to provide financial and technical assistance for landowners and producers to improve salmon habitat in Water Resource Inventory Area 1(WRIA1) in the northern Puget Sound area.
Financial assistance is being offered through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program; Land Management for Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23). Projects must be within the WRIA 1 area which covers the majority of Whatcom County. Practices eligible for funding include aquatic organism passage and stream habitat improvement and management. Partners will work with producers to replace culverts on farm and forest access roads to restore fish passage and place wood in priority stream reaches to improve fish habitat.
Funding is limited, and applications will be subject to a ranking system. In order to be eligible, it is important that interested parties visit their local Farm Service Agency office as soon as possible to ensure that their farm records are established. Applicants wanting to be considered for FY23 funds must complete all application paperwork by Feb. 27, 2023.
