The higher education system in Indonesia serves more than seven million students, but currently has not produced graduates with expertise that meets international standards and private sector demand. The United States facilitates partnerships between US and Indonesian universities and the private sector to equip students with world-class education and the skills needed.
The extraordinary increase in graduation of students from high schools in Indonesia triggered greater demand for quality higher education. 1 Increasing the quality of universities to meet world class standards will increase competitiveness, prepare students to become a productive workforce, and contribute to national economic growth. To achieve this standard, Indonesian higher education institutions seek global collaboration and partnerships.
Higher Education Partnership Initiative (USAID HEPI)
Partnering with Arizona State University through HEPI, USAID strengthens partnerships between US and Indonesian institutions to improve science, technology, engineering, study programs, and mathematics in higher education (PT ) was chosen in Indonesia to meet international standards and industry demand. HEPI supports PT Indonesia institutions through a consortium of universities, governments and industry partners to improve curriculum relevant to industry, meet international accreditation standards, and increase recognition of course credit between US and Indonesian universities.
Expected Results
In early 2027, USAID through HEPI sought to increase the number of new college graduates who were able to get jobs with good salaries. This will be achieved by increasing the number of lecture curricula in Indonesia that meet industry-based certification requirements and by increasing the number of science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs that meet US quality accreditation standards. This advantage will make course credits from universities in Indonesia transferable to the US and other international universities.
Progress in this field will help Indonesia consolidate extraordinary achievements over the past few years in increasing access to education by developing an education system that supports economic needs and the transition to a country with high income status.
