Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Representative to the United Nations, will travel to Hampton Roads, Virginia on February 10. The Ambassador will visit USNS Comfort at the Norfolk Naval Station, NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, and the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg.
Aboard USNS Comfort, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield, along with U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) – a member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees – will receive a tour of the hospital ship, followed by a brief on the ship’s humanitarian assistance missions, including Comfort’s last completed 2022 Continuing Promise mission which provided medical and humanitarian aid in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, and Honduras.
As President Biden said last night in his State of the Union address, the climate crisis is an existential threat and the United States is rallying the world to address this and other challenges, including food insecurity. During her visit to NASA Langley, the Ambassador will discuss with some of America’s foremost climate science professionals the United States’ efforts to combat these challenges through technological and innovative advances in applied sciences.
These efforts are supported by the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act which calls on NASA to lead a climate action plan and requires the establishment of a research and development initiative on reducing greenhouse gas and noise emissions from aircraft, among other activities.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will receive an honorary doctorate from William & Mary and give remarks on leadership during the college’s Charter Day exercises. While on campus, the Ambassador will also attend the Bray School preservation launch ceremony.
