Since the February 6 earthquakes impacting Turkiye and Syria, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Representative to the United Nations, has consulted with numerous leaders from the NGO community with staff on the frontlines providing urgent rescue and humanitarian response.
On Monday, February 6, she spoke with Presidents of InterAction and the International Rescue Committee, who both underscored the dire situation on the ground as humanitarian workers and first responders attempt to save lives while also facing personal tragedy. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield reiterated our support for the NGO community and our commitment to help meet critical funding needs as the world’s largest humanitarian donor. She conveyed her condolences to all those whose loved ones have been killed or injured in the earthquakes and applauded the courage of humanitarians and volunteers working in harsh and heartbreaking conditions.
Today, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield spoke with representatives of Save the Children, Care, and the White Helmets, who described the urgent need for shelter, clean water, and cash assistance, as well as increased access into Syria to allow local NGOs to deliver life-saving aid. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield voiced U.S. support for additional cross-border access points from Türkiye into northwest Syria to facilitate deliveries of earthquake-specific aid. She commended the search and rescue efforts by the White Helmets, which have saved thousands of people from collapsed buildings in northern Syria.
The NGOs underscored the importance of close coordination with the UN, and Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the imperative of the UN supporting NGOs on the ground who are delivering critical services in response to the earthquakes.
