On February 27–28, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Marisa Lago will travel to South Florida to engage with members of the local business community, trade associations, college students, and academic leaders.
During the visit, Under Secretary Lago will underscore the International Trade Administration’s (ITA) support for small- and medium-sized enterprises, underrepresented businesses and workers through promoting trade and investment, helping U.S. businesses compete and win globally, and ensuring fair trade through rigorous enforcement of U.S. trade laws and agreements.
On February 27, Under Secretary Lago will tour the Port of Miami – one of America’s fastest-growing commercial gateways and a major engine of economic activity in Miami-Dade County. Then, Under Secretary Lago will meet with the leadership of Florida International University (FIU), the largest minority-serving institution in Florida and the largest Hispanic-serving institution in the United States, and participate in a roundtable with students focused on diversifying recruitment into public service. Later, Under Secretary Lago will participate in a roundtable discussion hosted by Miami Dade College to engage with students as well as alumni of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program, which helps entrepreneurs create jobs and economic opportunities by providing greater access to education, capital, and business support services.
On February 28, Under Secretary Lago will meet with local workers and farmers and tour local tomato producers in Immokalee, Florida, to understand the impacts of unfair foreign competition on market conditions and sustainable agricultural food systems. In addition, the Under Secretary will highlight ITA’s efforts to ensure fair trade practices and secure supply chains in the region.
