Fugitive Operations Team members of Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston detained a Brazilian fugitive wanted for murder in his native country Feb. 21.
According to a news release, the Brazilian government issued a criminal warrant for the arrest of the international fugitive on suspicion of aggravated homicide. The warrant was issued by a criminal court in Governador Valadares, a city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.
“This fugitive has been accused of a heinous crime in his native country of Brazil and attempted to evade justice by hiding in Everett, Mass.," ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd Lyons said in the release. "The men and women of ERO Boston ensure foreign fugitives will not find refuge from their alleged crimes here in the commonwealth of Massachusetts."
The criminally accused fugitive was initially captured by the U.S. Border Patrol in August 2021 close to Otay Mesa, Calif., after authorities discovered he had entered the country unlawfully, the release reported. He was given a notice to appear, accused of being inadmissible, and released on his own recognizance while removal proceedings were ongoing by the authorities.
Following the fugitive's release on recognizance by the U.S. Border Patrol, which alerted ERO Boston officials, the Brazilian criminal court issued an arrest warrant for him, according to the release. The fleeing Brazilian will stay in ICE detention while a hearing with the Department of Justice's Executive Office for Immigration Review is arranged. This person might spend up to 30 years in jail if found guilty of the crime.
"I am proud of my officers and the work that they do every day to provide for the safety and security of others in our communities,” Lyons said in the release.
ERO detained 46,396 noncitizens with a criminal history for the fiscal year 2022, according to the release. These individuals had 198,498 related charges and convictions. They included 1,501 homicide-related offenses, 1,114 kidnapping offenses, 8,164 sex and sexual assault offenses, 5,554 weapons offenses, 21,531 assault offenses and 8,164 other offenses.
