The land associated with Billings Gap is part of the land within the 2004 boundary expansion of Petrified Forest National Park. Many new archaeological and paleontological discoveries have been made and are now protected in these new lands. Note the beautifully eroded sandstone and conglomerate hoodoos. When you reach the Billings Gap overlook you are about halfway around the loop. Follow the other side of the rim back south toward the Blue Mesa Loop Road back to where you are parked.
