IBM announces new artificial intelligence, data platform

IBM (International Business Machines Corporation) has announced the release of a new enterprise-ready artificial intelligence (AI) and data platform that will help transform AI for businesses.

The company, based in Armonk, New York, announced May 9 at its annual Think conference in Orlando, Florida, the IBM “watsonx”, a new AI and data platform, a news release said.

Its data platform has three components:

“The watsonx.ai studio for new foundation models, generative AI and machine learning," IBM's website said. "The watsonx.data fit-for-purpose store for the flexibility of a data lake and the performance of a data warehouse.

"Plus, the watsonx.governance tool kit, to enable AI workflows that are built with responsibility, transparency and explainability,” the website continued to explain.

Artificial intelligence uses machines and computers to simulate human intelligence processes, TechTarget said.

“AI requires a foundation of specialized hardware and software for writing and training machine learning algorithms,” TechTarget said. “It has been effectively used in business to automate tasks done by humans, including customer service work, lead generation, fraud detection and quality control.”

Businesses using AI “need access to a full technology stack that enables them to train, tune and deploy AI models, including foundation models and machine learning capabilities,” IBM said.

“With the development of foundation models, AI for business is more powerful than ever,” said Arvind Krishna, IBM chairman and CEO. “Foundation models make deploying AI significantly more scalable, affordable, and efficient.

"We built IBM watsonx for the needs of enterprises, so that clients can be more than just users, they can become AI advantaged," he added. "With IBM watsonx, clients can quickly train and deploy custom AI capabilities across their entire business, all while retaining full control of their data.”
