Economic Development Administration announces 2023 STEM winners

The U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration (EDA) has announced the winners of the 2023 STEM Talent Challenge. This competition, managed by the EDA, aims to support local innovation economies and develop STEM talent across the country. As part of President Biden's economic strategy, known as Bidenomics, these awards are a crucial component of investing in American workers and talent streams.

The competition offers a total of $4.5 million in funding, with up to $500,000 available for each winning initiative. The goal is to support the innovation economy in each region, create pathways to lucrative STEM professions, and develop talent pipelines for employers in fast-growing industries. The EDA believes that by investing in people, communities can leverage their greatest asset and drive success in emerging fields.

Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development, Alejandra Y. Castillo, emphasized the importance of the STEM Talent Challenge in improving apprenticeship options and training programs. By ensuring that individuals have access to jobs in STEM professions within their local communities, this initiative aligns with the EDA's mission to foster tomorrow's crucial industries and build a strong and skilled labor force.

The 11 recipients of the STEM Talent Challenge grants were chosen from a pool of 90 applicants. They will receive a combined total of $4.7 million, with matching funds from public and private sources. The projects funded by these grants focus on work-and-learn initiatives in various STEM fields, including advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, data science, geospatial technology, artificial intelligence, and aerospace.

Overall, the STEM Talent Challenge is a significant step in investing in America's workforce and ensuring that workers have the skills and training needed for good-paying jobs in growing STEM industries. By supporting innovative initiatives and developing talent pipelines, the Biden Administration aims to drive economic growth and foster success in emerging fields.
