The city of Oak Park Heights, Minnesota, will receive a $1.5 million grant from the Department's Economic Development Administration for water infrastructure upgrades, including a new municipal well and pumphouse to ensure continuous water service throughout the city, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced on September 26.
"The Economic Development Administration is pleased to partner with Oak Park Heights through this strategic, place-based grant as it seeks to bring new opportunities to the region," said Gina Raimondo.
In a region affected by changes in the energy economy, this project will improve water capacity to serve both existing enterprises and potential new ones. According to recipient estimates, this EDA investment will result in the retention of 1,070 jobs and $1.5 million in local funds.
"This initiative will support the local economy and preserve local jobs," said Alejandra Y. Castillo, assistant secretary of commerce for economic development.
Governor Tim Walz expressed his appreciation for the efforts to enhance Oak Park Heights' water infrastructure. "Every community's security and well-being depend on sound water infrastructure," he said. "I appreciate President Biden and Secretary Raimondo's dedication to Minnesota's local communities and the preservation of well-paying jobs. I anticipate our ongoing collaboration."
Congresswoman Betty McCollum also praised the grant, stating, "This investment will sustain a thriving workforce that is essential to the local economy in addition to enhancing water infrastructure. We appreciate the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce for recognizing the need to boost water capacity to support our town."
The funding for this project was provided through the Assistance to Coal towns (ACC) initiative, which grants funds on a competitive basis to towns negatively affected by the decline in the use of coal. Projects funded by the ACC promote workforce development, capital investment, economic diversification, job creation, and reemployment prospects.
