Isreal becomes the 41st member of the Visa Waiver Program, Strengthening Ties with the US
In a significant move that marks a new chapter in U.S.-Israel relations, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas, alongside Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, announced Israel's inclusion into the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).
According to the announcement, starting November 30, 2023, the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) will be revamped to permit Israeli citizens and nationals to travel to the United States for tourism or business-related activities for durations of up to 90 days without the need to secure a U.S. visa beforehand. This adjustment comes on the back of modifications in Israel's travel policies. Similarly, U.S. citizens can now seek entry into Israel for the same duration and purposes without requiring a visa.
As part of the VWP’s protocol, from the end of November, Israelis will have the provision to apply online for authorization to enter the U.S. through the ESTA. Typically, such authorizations will have a validity of two years. However, for Israeli citizens currently holding valid B-1/B-2 visas, they can continue to use them for their business and tourism journeys to the United States.
Highlighting the importance of this decision, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas commented, “The designation of Israel into the Visa Waiver Program is an important recognition of our shared security interests and the close cooperation between our two countries.” He further elaborated on the significance of this collaboration, emphasizing the enhancements in counterterrorism, law enforcement, and other common areas of interest.
Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken also shared his views, underscoring the strategic importance of this move. “Israel’s entry into the Visa Waiver Program represents a critical step forward in our strategic partnership with Israel. It's a leap that will further cement the long-standing connections between our people, foster economic collaboration, and bolster security coordination,” he said. Blinken also noted that the achievement would "enhance freedom of movement for U.S. citizens, including those living in the Palestinian Territories or traveling to and from them."
