Updates to the semiconductor alert system from the US Department of Commerce

Commerce

The U.S. Department of Commerce has introduced an improved Semiconductor Alert Mechanism, which is supervised by the International Trade Administration, in keeping with President Biden's unwavering commitment to strengthening strong international supply chains for semiconductors.

This program is an important step toward assuring the long-term viability of semiconductor supply chains, which is in accordance with the strategic goal of the administration to strengthen critical industries and to increase the economic resilience of the world as a whole.

The goal of the Semiconductor Alert Mechanism developed by the Department of Commerce is to improve the ability of the government to mobilize and coordinate its resources, with the ultimate goal of lowering the risks that are associated with chokepoints in the semiconductor supply chain. The alert system is a public-private information-gathering technique that facilitates the expedited problem-solving process through collaboration with trading partners and the private sector.

The Department of Commerce is seeking information from businesses, manufacturers, and anyone else who has knowledge of the global supply chain for microelectronics and semiconductors regarding any disruptions that have occurred, are occurring, or are likely to occur. Specifically, the department is interested in hearing about any problems that have already occurred, are currently occurring, or are anticipated to occur. The information that has been obtained will be utilized to determine the likelihood of disruptions, improve communication with international trading partners, and lessen the impact that these disruptions will have on the global semiconductor supply chain.

The Department of Commerce will maintain communication with parties interested in the matter on an as-needed basis and will consider contributions in an ongoing fashion. If you want Commerce to follow its promise and protect the confidentiality of the business information you submit, you must make it very apparent that the material is classified as secret when you hand it over. The confidential nature of the submissions shall be guarded by Commerce to the greatest extent permitted by applicable laws.
