CAP report spotlights accountability gaps after 2020 election

While criminal indictments against former President Donald Trump have made headlines, a report compiled by the Center for American Progress (CAP) highlights that certain lawmakers have escaped similar scrutiny.

Specifically, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), a frontrunner to replace Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker, has not faced legal repercussions for his role in challenging the election and defying congressional subpoenas, according to the press release. The report noted that both Jordan and McCarthy remain unaccountable for their actions.

The Center for American Progress report delves into ongoing criminal cases against Trump, efforts to disqualify him under the 14th Amendment, and disciplinary proceedings against his top legal advisors. State-level investigations are also cited, shedding light on the multifaceted efforts to enforce accountability.

Michael Sozan, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and the report's author, emphasized in the press release that "No one is above the law in a strong democracy, not even a former president. With the guardrails of democracy being severely tested, these efforts to hold Trump and his allies accountable are critical to sending that message. That's especially true as Trump continues to use extreme and violent political rhetoric. But it's unacceptable that Jim Jordan, who allegedly played a pivotal role in helping Trump plan to overturn the election and later defied a congressional subpoena for testimony, is a leading contender for House speaker."

Despite some progress, both the report and the press release emphasize the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to upholding democratic norms and institutions.
