Blinken thanks supporters at Kennedy Center Honors Dinner

U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken addressed the audience at the Kennedy Center Honors Dinner, expressing gratitude to those within government who have been instrumental to the department's work. The annual event took place at the prestigious Kennedy Center.

According to a news release from the Department of State (DOS), Blinken mentioned that he eagerly anticipates the Kennedy Center Honors Dinner each year. "To Deborah Rutter and the Kennedy Center Board, thank you," said Blinken. "Thank you for your incredible stewardship of President Kennedy’s legacy and for bringing the arts into every home in America. I especially want to recognize David Rubenstein for all that he has done to support this department and also our democracy."

Blinken further thanked Rubenstein for lending an original copy of the Declaration of Independence which is displayed in the John Quincy Room. He referred to both Rubenstein and the historical document as "national treasures".

In his address, Blinken also recognized supportive members of Congress, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, and highlighted Speaker Nancy Pelosi as an advocate for both arts and America according to DOS's news release.

One highlight of his speech was a special mention about Rita Moreno, who served as master of ceremonies at the event: "Rita’s unforgettable performances in films like West Side Story remind us why we like being in America and also why we continue working toward realizing our nation’s highest ideals," stated Blinken.

The Secretary concluded his speech by emphasizing on art's power to connect people regardless their language, origin or beliefs according to another DOS report.
