Chairwoman Stabenow Applauds Appointees of New Tribal Advisory Committee

Senator Debbie Stabenow, Chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, has expressed her approval of the newly appointed members of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Tribal Advisory Committee. This committee, established by Stabenow in the 2018 Farm Bill, aims to ensure that Indian Country is well represented in USDA programs and resources, providing advice on tribal-related issues and policies.

Among the 11 inaugural members of the committee is Whitney Gravelle from the Bay Mills Indian Community, who was appointed by Stabenow. Gravelle, the President of the Bay Mills Indian Community and former Chief Judge for the Bay Mills Tribal Court, brings valuable experience and perspective to the committee.

Stabenow emphasized the significance of the 2018 Farm Bill in supporting tribal communities, stating, "In the 2018 Farm Bill, we strengthened support for tribal communities in every title of the bill, and I look forward to building on that progress." She expressed her confidence in President Gravelle's qualifications, highlighting her role as the second and youngest woman to ever serve as President of the Bay Mills Indian Community. Stabenow believes that Gravelle will effectively represent the interests of tribal communities not only in Michigan but across the country.

The creation of the Tribal Advisory Committee is a crucial step towards improving equity at the USDA. By ensuring that Indian Country has a voice and a seat at the table, the committee will contribute to the development of policies and programs that directly impact tribal communities. With the expertise and dedication of its members, the committee will play a vital role in shaping a more inclusive and supportive agricultural landscape for Native American tribes.

The appointment of Whitney Gravelle and the other members of the inaugural Tribal Advisory Committee marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to empower tribal communities and address their specific needs and concerns within the USDA. As the committee begins its work, it is expected to make a lasting impact on the lives and livelihoods of Native American tribes across the nation.
