Border Patrol agents have successfully thwarted an illegal crossing attempt by four individuals across the Niagara River, as per a tweet from Chief Patrol Agent Thomas G. Martin of the Buffalo sector. The individual allegedly coordinating the effort was also apprehended.

Martin stated, "Niagara Falls Border Patrol Agents observed and apprehended 4 subjects that illegally entered the US by crossing the Niagara River on a raft. Agents also arrested one additional person who was the driver picking them up as part of a failed smuggling attempt. #usborderpatrol #usbp."

In response to an increase in migrant crossings, the Border Patrol commenced construction on a new facility in August 2023, according to a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) news release. The upcoming 31,000-square-foot facility is set to be completed by late 2024 and will accommodate up to 50 Border Patrol agents. This new structure will replace the existing facility built in 1964.

According to the CBP release, U.S. Border Patrol Chief of Law Enforcement Operations Directorate David S. BeMiller spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony and said that CBP had "the ability to plan, and execute, building state of the art stations like the one we are here to break ground on."

In April 2023, Border Patrol agents apprehended three Mexican migrants attempting illegal entry into the country via an incoming freight train from Canada on the International Railroad Bridge in the Niagara River area.

Reflecting on this incident, Martin said: "This is a great example of how our Border Patrol Agents work tirelessly to protect the Western New York area." He added that agents have apprehended 24 non-citizens in the last 60 days attempting to cross near Buffalo, NY. "This incident highlights one of the treacherous and dangerous pathways used to illegally enter the United States. Just recently, a family of non-citizen migrants, including an infant, traversed the International Railroad Bridge without regard for their safety."
