HHS Secretary: 'Obamacare continues to break records'

The Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), Xavier Becerra, has announced that over 20 million individuals have enrolled for health care through the Affordable Care Act. The announcement was made on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Becerra stated, "Obamacare continues to break records! This year, over 20M people selected an ACA Marketplace plan – more than ever before! @POTUS promised to strengthen and build on the Affordable Care Act, and these numbers show we are delivering results for the American people."

The HHS news release indicates that this figure represents a record number of enrollments since the registration period commenced on November 1, 2023. The data includes enrollees from the 18 states and the District of Columbia with State-based marketplaces as well as the 32 states utilizing HealthCare.gov.

In his statement, Becerra said, "Today is a momentous day. A record number of people in the United States have health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act’s marketplace — more than at any point in history. More people with access to preventive care means a healthier country and lower health care costs across the board. Quality health care gives people the peace of mind they need to participate fully in their communities, spend time with those they love, and pursue their part of the American dream. President Biden promised increased access to affordable, quality care and these results show he is delivering for the American people. His leadership has been essential."

According to the HHS release, the 2024 Marketplace Open Enrollment Period will begin on January 16. Individuals interested in enrolling can do so by visiting HealthCare.gov websites. State-based marketplace enrollment deadlines vary; however, customers who register by January 16 will be eligible for medical coverage starting February 1.

Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, CMS Administrator, added her perspective: "Today’s announcement means more than 20 million people have the security of knowing they have access to affordable health care in 2024. This is a connection to insulin, to high blood pressure medication, to all essential health benefits. This year’s plan selection is a record-breaking achievement. It shows how far we’ve come and how much this Administration values and is continuing to build on the legacy of the Affordable Care Act nearly 14 years since it was first passed."
