Eric Fanning, President and CEO of the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), has released a statement in response to the Department of Defense's recently unveiled National Defense Industrial Strategy (NDIS). This strategy is an unprecedented move that aims to guide the agency's engagement, policy development, and investment in the industrial base over the next three to five years.

Fanning acknowledged the significance of AIA members within the defense industrial base and their role as a cornerstone of our National Defense Strategy. He said, "The defense industrial base – including Aerospace Industries Association members – is the cornerstone of our National Defense Strategy, so we appreciate the Administration’s focus on strengthening this strategic asset with a formal industrial base policy proposal". He further emphasized a shared goal for a more efficient and resilient industrial base. Fanning added, "Our shared goal is a faster, more resilient, more cost-effective industrial base, but we also must avoid additional burdens that will drive up costs and drive companies away from working with the Department of Defense". Fanning concluded by emphasizing the importance of understanding all aspects of these recommendations. He stated, "The details will be critical, and we will continue to engage with the Department of Defense to ensure both sides fully understand the intent and impact of the recommendations."

According to a press release from the Defense Department, it is suggested that NDIS will "catalyze generational change from the existing defense industrial base to a more robust, resilient and dynamic modernized defense industrial ecosystem." The strategy not only highlights challenges, solutions and risks associated with failure but also provides strategic vision for four key priorities: resilient supply chains, workforce readiness, flexible acquisition and economic deterrence.

The same press release further elaborates that NDIS offers a strategic vision to coordinate actions aimed at creating a modern defense industrial ecosystem that aligns completely with the National Defense Strategy. It underscores that this strategy necessitates cooperation among various entities including U.S. government agencies, private industry, and international allies and partners.

The AIA, established in 1919, serves as an advocate for the U.S. aerospace and defense industry. According to its website, the association's membership includes more than 300 companies.
