DOE allocates $20 million across 32 states for place-based energy solutions

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a funding allocation of $20.5 million to 32 states, territories, local governments, and Tribes through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program. This financial support will facilitate a variety of initiatives such as electric bicycle incentives, free home solarization for low-income families, municipal fleet electrification, decarbonization waste management strategies, and municipal building energy audits.

According to a press release by DOE, the recent allocation of funding to 15 cities, 9 counties, 5 states, 1 Tribe, 1 territory, and the District of Columbia represents the third round of formula awards under the EECBG Program since October 2023. With a total funding pool exceeding $431 million, this initiative enables 2,708 states, local governments, Tribes, territories and the District of Columbia to implement programs and projects aimed at enhancing energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and lowering overall energy consumption. The deadline for local governments and Tribes to submit applications is April 30th, 2024.

Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm said in a DOE press release: "This program continues to bring essential federal funding directly to local communities across the country helping Americans access energy efficiency upgrades like electric vehicle chargers and e-bike rebates weatherization affordable solar panels and more." She further stated that "The President’s Investing in America agenda is supporting local governments and tribal nations plan for a clean energy future deploying energy efficiency upgrades that save money and build more resilient communities."

According to information on the EECBG Program webpage provided by DOE: The EECBG Program supports states local governments and Tribes in implementing strategies for energy reduction and efficiency. Tailored resources including a dedicated website and technical assistance hub cater to Tribes with information on application steps and assistance options. A voucher application portal has been introduced offering local governments and Tribes the flexibility to apply for technical assistance and/or equipment rebate vouchers instead of traditional grants.
