The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has declared the availability of $5 million in grant funding for transitional supportive housing for homeless Veterans. This initiative was established following the discovery that 46,000 Veterans were homeless in 2023.

According to a document released by the VA, this grant program forms part of the ongoing efforts to eradicate Veteran homelessness in the United States. The VA has published a Notice of Funding Opportunity, allocating $5 million annually for two years to help combat Veteran homelessness. These grants empower the program within VA's Homeless Programs Office to provide financial assistance through a two-year grant aimed at reducing the cost of facilitating transitional housing and supportive services for eligible Veterans. This funding will aid special needs Veterans by offsetting operational costs associated with housing and any additional support required. The special needs grants are designed to assist homeless Veterans who are women, elderly, terminally ill, chronically mentally ill or those caring for minor dependents.

In a press release by the VA, it was stated that these funds would be accessible through the Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem Program. This program offers financial aid to community organizations that assist Veterans by providing transitional housing and case management support. A crucial component of the Unity Agenda has been to support Veterans experiencing homelessness. Since 2020, there has been a 4% decrease in Veterans experiencing homelessness.

The VA also indicated in their press release that their strategies to tackle Veteran homelessness are based on reaching out to homeless Veterans and understanding their unique care and support needs. Through adopting a 'housing first' approach, priority is given to providing housing for Veterans before equipping them with necessary support to maintain their accommodation. This includes healthcare provision, job training and education assistance.
