The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has published a report detailing the economic contributions of refugees and asylees, amounting to $124 billion over a 15-year period. The report, titled "The Fiscal Impact of Refugees and Asylees at The Federal, State and Local Levels From 2005-2019," aims to inform lawmakers about the economic benefits brought by this demographic group to aid in decisions regarding refugee resettlement services.

According to an HHS news release, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) collaborated with HHS in producing the report. It discloses that between 2005 and 2019, local and state governments received $92.3 billion in net fiscal benefits, while the federal government gained $31.5 billion.

HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra stated, "This historic federal study is important data-driven evidence demonstrating that over time, refugees, asylees, and their immediate families have made significant positive fiscal contributions to our country." He expressed his hope that this report would serve as a crucial reference for decision-makers across all levels of government concerning refugee resettlement.

However, the report does not provide comprehensive information on the lifetime costs and benefits of refugees and asylees or their impact on specific regions, according to the news release. Despite this limitation, it is anticipated that the data will support federal humanitarian programs due to its significant impact on the government budget even after accounting for assistance costs.

Robin Dunn Marcos, HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Humanitarian Services and Director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), commented on America's commitment towards supporting those escaping persecution in their home countries. She said: "We operate this program because of our country’s commitment to supporting the humanitarian needs of those escaping persecution in their home country." Marcos highlighted how refugees and asylees have been making substantial contributions to communities and workplaces for years. She added, "This report affirms ORR’s mission and commitment, and we celebrate these and other contributions refugees and asylees bring to this country."
