Consumer Technology Association publishes brief to instill common understanding of healthcare AI

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), in collaboration with various healthcare associations and coalitions, has published a brief that outlines the definition and role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare sector. The aim of this publication is to foster a shared understanding of AI in healthcare among policymakers, regulators, developers, and other public health stakeholders.

According to a CTA press release, the development of the brief—titled "What is Health AI?"—involved representatives from nine organizations. These representatives, along with policymakers, contributed to the creation of resources for promoting safe, trustworthy, and effective healthcare AI applications.

"For AI to improve patient outcomes and create a more sustainable and accessible healthcare system, federal policy must support both the continued innovation and safe use of AI," said René Quashie, CTA Vice President of Digital Health, in the press release.

The CTA press release also revealed that "What is Health AI?" is the first in a series of planned briefs providing an overview of how AI could revolutionize healthcare. Over the next few months, the association plans to publish three white papers on related topics: data privacy, bias, and reimbursement.

In addition to CTA, several organizations participated in drafting the brief. These include AdvaMed, AHIP, American College of Cardiology, Alliance of Community Health Plans, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, Coalition for Health AI, Council of Medical Specialty Societies, Digital Medicine Society and Laura Adams who is a Senior Advisor at National Academy of Medicine.

"The health industry has a responsibility to inform effective policy. We are proud to work with this outstanding group of healthcare industry leaders to share our common language about healthcare AI. Together we are ensuring that policymakers have the information they need to develop thoughtful policy during this critical time of modernization of our healthcare system," Quashie said in the press release.
