The United States has issued a strong call for peace in the conflict-ridden region of El Fasher, North Darfur, Sudan. In a statement released by Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson, on April 24, 2024, the United States urged all armed forces in Sudan to halt their attacks immediately.
Miller expressed deep concern over the potential offensive actions by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its allied militias in El Fasher. He emphasized the grave danger such an offensive would pose to civilians, particularly the displaced population seeking refuge in the city. The Department Spokesperson also condemned the reported destruction of villages by the RSF and its affiliates, as well as the indiscriminate aerial bombardments carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in the region.
Highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian access, Miller called on the leaders of the SAF and RSF to make a crucial decision. He outlined the stark choice facing them - either to escalate violence and prolong the suffering of their people, risking further destabilization of the country, or to cease attacks, enable unimpeded humanitarian assistance, and engage in sincere negotiations to bring an end to the conflict and empower the people of Sudan.
The United States' appeal for an immediate cessation of hostilities in El Fasher underscores the pressing need for peace and stability in the region, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the well-being and safety of civilians caught in the midst of conflict.
