HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra released a statement on Earth Day emphasizing the crucial link between our health and the health of the planet. He highlighted the impacts of climate change on communities across the country, stating, "Climate change is characterized by deep inequities, it’s often the communities who have suffered from past injustices and who have the least access to health care that are hit the hardest. They deserve better."
Becerra also discussed the initiatives taken by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to address climate change and health equity, including the establishment of the Office of Climate Change and Health Equity. He expressed pride in the work done through the HHS’ Catalytic Program, which aims to connect health care providers to opportunities for energy efficiency, sustainability, and resilience.
In line with their commitment to sustainability and community resilience, HHS, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Weather Service, launched an Experimental HeatRisk tool to forecast heat-related risks nationwide. Becerra highlighted the importance of programs like the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) in keeping families safe, especially those most at risk from extreme heat and wildfire smoke, such as farmworkers.
Looking ahead, Becerra reiterated HHS's proactive stance in protecting communities from climate change and environmental injustices. One example he provided was the civil rights enforcement action initiated in Lowndes County, Alabama, to address the lack of wastewater disposal systems in a predominantly Black and low-income community.
In conclusion, Becerra reaffirmed his dedication to advancing climate justice and building a healthier nation for future generations, stating, "You can count on me to continue to prioritize climate justice to ensure a healthier future for us all, on Earth Day and every other day."
