Senator Collins Questions Secretary of Education on Rise of Anti-Semitism on College Campuses

On the Hill

Washington, D.C. – Senator Susan Collins, Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee, engaged in a discussion with Secretary of the Department of Education Miguel Cardona regarding the concerning increase in anti-Semitic incidents on college campuses during a hearing to review the Fiscal Year 2025 budget request for the U.S. Department of Education.

Senator Collins expressed her dismay at the rise of anti-Semitism on college campuses, stating, "Every day we hear from Jewish students who tell me that they're frightened on campus. I just cannot believe the rise of anti-Semitism on our college campuses." She also highlighted that the Anti-Defamation League reported a 360% increase in anti-Semitic incidents nationwide since October 7th.

In response to Senator Collins' concerns, Secretary Cardona acknowledged the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety of all students on campus. He mentioned, "I've spoken to Jewish students who have shared with me that they've had to take a different route to class, or that their parents don't feel safe sending them to school." Secretary Cardona also mentioned the resources and tools available on ed.gov to address campus safety issues, reiterating the Department's commitment to supporting students and combating anti-Semitism.

Senator Collins and Secretary Cardona emphasized the distinction between peaceful protests and unacceptable behavior such as harassment and intimidation on college campuses, with both agreeing on the need to prioritize the safety and well-being of students.

The exchange between Senator Collins and Secretary Cardona underscores the ongoing efforts to address the rise of anti-Semitism and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students on college campuses.
