The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a partnership with Webster County, Kentucky, to provide technical assistance through the Energy Communities Technical Assistance Pilot program. This initiative aims to support community-driven energy transition and economic revitalization goals in Webster County and other recipient communities.

Vicki Arroyo, EPA Associate Administrator for Policy, highlighted the significance of the Inflation Reduction Act in promoting low-carbon and renewable energy generation. Arroyo stated, "Our Energy Communities pilot is delivering assistance to communities to help make their vision a reality."

Steve Henry, Webster County Judge Executive, expressed the community's commitment to revitalization through the Energy Communities Pilot. Henry stated, "Our community has taken several strides toward revitalization and through the Energy Communities Pilot, we’re hoping to take steps toward giving current residents and future generations reason to stay in Webster County and have choices for a thriving economic future."

The technical assistance provided by EPA will focus on various aspects of energy transition, including workforce development, partnership building, and site redevelopment after coal mine and power plant closures. The project aims to enhance community planning capacity and promote economic diversification to create a more resilient local economy.

Webster County, KY, will utilize the Energy Communities Pilot to identify resources and partnerships for new economic opportunities. The community is still grappling with the economic effects of the 2019 mine closure and aims to rehabilitate abandoned mine lands for alternative uses.

Through workshops and collaboration with federal, state, and local partners, EPA will support Webster County and another community in their transition planning efforts. The ultimate goal is to develop a playbook that can guide energy communities in navigating the transition to a more sustainable and economically diverse future.
