HUD Announces New Critical Investments in our Nation’s Public Housing

WASHINGTON - Today, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded $3.17 billion in Public Housing Repair funding to 2,756 public housing authorities (PHAs) in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to make capital investments to their public housing stock.

HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman expressed the importance of the grants, stating, “At HUD, our mission is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality homes for all.” Todman emphasized that the grant funding is a necessary investment to ensure that public housing meets the needs of its residents and strengthens neighborhoods for future generations.

The grants announced are part of HUD's Capital Fund Program, which provides annual funding to public housing authorities for the development, renovation, and modernization of public housing in their communities. This funding allows housing authorities to undertake significant improvements such as replacing roofs, implementing energy-efficient upgrades to heating systems, and installing water conservation measures.

For over 80 years, the federal government has been investing billions of dollars in the development and maintenance of public housing, with the Capital Fund grants serving as critical support for these efforts.
