The Department of Labor has announced that its Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) will host its second annual 'Stand Down to Save Lives' on May 22. This event is part of a national campaign aimed at encouraging the mining community to take proactive measures to prevent fatalities and injuries.

The MSHA is urging miners, operators, and unions to dedicate time during the week of May 20-24 to emphasize the importance of safety and health in and around U.S. mines. On May 22, agency leaders and staff will visit mines across the country as part of MSHA's ongoing educational and outreach efforts to reduce serious injuries, illnesses, and fatalities in the industry.

Assistant Secretary for Mine Safety and Health Chris Williamson explained, "Stand Down to Save Lives is an opportunity for the entire mining community to prioritize and commit to ensuring the health and safety of all miners." He added, "We encourage everyone in the mining community to again join MSHA and stand down on May 22. As we have learned throughout the years, we succeed when we work together, and miners are safer and healthier as a result."

'Stand Down To Save Lives' is one among many initiatives designed to reduce injuries and fatalities suffered by miners each year. During this year's event, MSHA strongly encourages the entire mining community to engage in open discussions about common hazards in mining operations, conduct thorough examinations of workplaces and equipment, and participate in safety training sessions designed to enhance awareness and preparedness.
