The CEO of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), Gary Shapiro, has issued a statement in response to Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer's AI policy framework that was released recently.

Shapiro expressed gratitude towards Senate Majority Leader Schumer for spearheading a meticulous and bipartisan process to advance much-needed AI legislation. He emphasized the importance of a clear national AI policy with proper safeguards for American innovation in AI to thrive safely. "We thank Senate Majority Leader Schumer for leading a thoughtful and deliberative bi-partisan process to advance much-needed AI legislation. Technology is borderless, and as a global leader in innovation, the U.S. needs a clear national AI policy with guardrails so American innovation in AI can safely flourish," stated Shapiro.

Shapiro also encouraged Congress to work collectively towards advancing bipartisan legislation that not only protects consumers but also ensures that U.S. innovators continue to be global leaders. The specifics of this proposal are currently under review by CTA.

In terms of background, CTA has recently endorsed bipartisan bills in Congress such as the CREATE AI Act (S.2714/ H.R.5077) and the Artificial Intelligence Research, Innovation, and Accountability Act of 2023 (S.3312). However, CTA has opposed state-level bills in California, Connecticut, and Colorado due to their potential to create significant barriers for smaller companies and entrepreneurs developing new services and products due to the complex and fragmented landscape of state laws and regulations.

Having published seven technology standards related to AI and contributed significantly to AI policymaking, CTA stands ready to collaborate with lawmakers on crucial national legislation. The success of AI policy and innovation hinges on cooperation between both private and public sectors.
