On May 16, 2024, Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell held a meeting with Italian Ambassador Mariangela Zappia. The meeting was later detailed by Spokesperson Matthew Miller.
According to Miller, Campbell expressed gratitude towards Zappia for Italy's leadership role within the G7 and its contributions to the security of Ukraine. The pair discussed the priorities and challenges faced by the G7, particularly those posed by the People’s Republic of China. This included China's support for Russia’s defense industrial base.
In addition, they reaffirmed their robust support for Ukraine in its fight for freedom against Russian aggression.
