Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, Uzra Zeya, is set to visit Astana, Kazakhstan and Tashkent, Uzbekistan from May 19-23. The purpose of her visit is to engage on issues concerning democratic governance and rule of law; human rights and protection of vulnerable populations; and religious freedom.
In Astana, Under Secretary Zeya will head the U.S. delegation at the third annual United States-Kazakhstan High-Level Dialogue (HLD) on Human Rights and Democratic Reforms. This event underscores the partnership between the two nations and supports Kazakhstan’s domestic reforms. At the HLD, she will engage with government partners on a variety of topics including freedom of expression and media, freedom of association, political participation, rule of law, and protection of vulnerable populations. In addition to these discussions, Under Secretary Zeya will meet with representatives from civil society to advance democratic values and acknowledge Kazakhstan’s efforts in addressing domestic violence.
In Tashkent, Under Secretary Zeya will deliver remarks at the Academic Conference on Constitutional Criminal Procedures. This conference is hosted by Regional Dialogue with an aim to bolster Uzbekistan’s ongoing implementation of constitutional reforms concerning human rights and equal access to justice. She will also interact with senior government officials, civil society members, and human rights defenders in order to promote gender equality, combat gender-based violence, support religious freedom, and protect vulnerable populations.
